Opening Statements Underway In Rape Trial Of Former Vols AJ Johnson And Michael Williams

Court is in session and opening statements are underway Monday in downtown Knoxville in the rape trial of former Vols AJ Johnson and Michael Williams.

This comes a week after jury selection began last Monday, July 16. It was completed on Friday.

Johnson and Williams face rape charges stemming from an alleged incident that happened in November 2014.

A woman claimed the two former Tennessee Football players raped her in her Knoxville apartment after a UT v. Kentucky game. Williams and Johnson were indicted on aggravated rape charges in February 2015.

Trial dates for Johnson and Williams have been moved multiple times while certain issues have been debated. Johnson and Williams have both pleaded not guilty.

Johnson also faces more charges after a traffic stop July 8, 2017.

The Knoxville Police Department said Johnson was sitting at a traffic light at the intersection of Kingston Pike and Neyland Drive just before 1:30 a.m., and did not drive forward once the light turned green.

A KPD officer checked on the 2007 Chevy Tahoe, and found Johnson in the vehicle with bloodshot eyes, smelling of alcohol and marijuana, according to a KPD report.

After allegedly failing a field sobriety test, Johnson was arrested and charged with first offense DUI, failure to exercise due care, implied consent and simple possession.
