Fire Destroys Apartment Complex In South Knox Killing Dog, Injuring Others

The Knoxville Fire Department battled a fire at an apartment complex on Sevier Avenue, and one dog is dead.

Several firemen responded at the scene around 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon at Southwood Apartments, 2980 Sevier Ave, and found flames coming from an apartment at the center of the complex.

The fire quickly grew, overtaking two adjoining apartments and into the attic area above.

Eight apartments were damaged in the blaze, but only three of them were occupied. Eight people have been displaced, but KFD said only one person was at home at the time. No residents were injured.

According to the fire captain, the dog was found dead inside the apartment they believe the fire originated from. Investigators are still working to figure out what started the fire.

KFD said a stream of water hit one firefighter and he fell off the water, but he was OK and returned to work.

The American Red Cross is on scene to assist displaced residents.
