Knoxville Woman Charged With Homicide After Police Say She Killed Grandfather

A Knoxville woman faces a homicide charge after police say she killed her grandfather Friday.

The Knoxville Police Department opened the homicide investigation after authorities were called to look into reports of a stabbing. According to KPD, officers were called to a house on the 400 block of Watauga Avenue at 1:50 a.m.

A representative with KPD said when officers arrived on the scene, they found Willie Smith on the floor just inside the front door. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators immediately took Smith's granddaughter, Kassandra Scharff, into custody at the scene.

According to the preliminary report by KPD, Scharff and Smith were in a fight when the granddaughter allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed her grandfather.

Scharff has been charged with one count of second degree homicide. She is being held at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $100,000 bond.
