School Crime Across Tennessee Rose 13.5% From 2015-2017 According to TBI Study

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- On Tuesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released its study of school crime, from 2015 through 2017. The report uses three years of crime data submitted by individual law enforcement agencies across the state.

The following highlights were detailed in the report:
-From 2015 to 2017, a total of 27,038 offenses were reported by law enforcement from schools
-The number of offenses each year increased by 13.5 percent, from 8,494 in 2015, to 9,642 in 2017
-The most frequent offense reported was simple assault, which made up 37.5 percent of all offenses reported
-September had the highest frequency of reported crimes in schools
-Males made up 57.3 percent of offenders in reported crimes, and females made up 52.8 percent of victims
-The most common weapon type reported in school crimes was "Personal Weapons," which include hands, fists, feet or other parts of the body. Personal Weapons were used in 80.1 percent of reported offenses
