UT Reaches $2.5M Settlement With Former AD John Currie

The University of Tennessee said Thursday it had completed an "amicable resolution" in regards to former UT Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics John Currie's departure from the school.

The university said it would be paying Currie $2.5 million, with $2,220,454.00 paid no later than April 1. The school said Currie had already been paid his salary for December 2017 through February 2018, and he will be paid his salary through March 22, 2018.

According to UT, Currie's separation payment will be paid entirely by the Athletics Department. No taxpayer dollars, student tuition or fees, or donor funds were allotted to be used for the separation payment.

UT Knoxville Chancellor Dr. Beverly Davenport said, “We wish John and his family well in their future endeavors. We are grateful for his contributions to the University of Tennessee which began more than two decades ago.”

Curie began serving in his position as the Director of Athletics on April 1, 2017, after serving eight years as Director of Athletics at Kansas State.

“Mary Lawrence and I were blessed with the opportunity to return to the city where our three children were born and once again be part of the University of Tennessee family as Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics,” Currie said. “It was my honor to work alongside our first-class UT athletics staff, coaches and student-athletes as well as our faculty, donors and many wonderful people throughout the University community. I look forward to seeing continued progress for the Vols and Lady Vols under Chancellor Davenport and Coach Fulmer’s leadership.”
