Boxer Dies After Passing Out At Boxing Weekend In Knox Tourney

Officials say a boxer at Boxing Weekend passed out and was taken out of the event on a stretcher Friday night.

According to KPD, he collapsed around 9:30 Friday evening and later died. He was a participant in the Ace Miller Boxing Tournament, an annual tournament where UT fraternities box against each other.

The source, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Local 8 News the boxer was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity and apparently passed out after boxing at the Knoxville Expo Center.

He was given medical assistance on-scene by medical personnel and later transported to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Officials are waiting on autopsy results to determine a cause of death.

Local 8 News was told the rest of the event was postponed and attendees were told to leave the arena for the night.

A Local 8 News Crew on scene said a few Knox County Sheriff's Deputies and Knoxville Fire Department vehicles were on scene of the Knoxville Expo Center.

A prayer vigil was held at 10:30 p.m. on the University of Tennessee campus.

According to an official website, Boxing Weekend is an amateur boxing event for fraternity members in Knoxville. Each year, about 55 boxers compete in 11 different weight classes over the course of a weekend.

Police say the investigation is on going.
