TBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting In Hawkins County

CHURCH HILL, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say a Tennessee sheriff's deputy has fatally shot a man while trying to serve felony warrants on him.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the shooting occurred Monday afternoon when Hawkins County deputies were trying to serve warrants out of Dickenson County, Virginia, on 25-year-old Eugene Loftis of Church Hill. The bureau says in a statement that deputies found Loftis in a car in the driveway of a residence and ordered him to show his hands. The statement says Loftis reached for a gun and one deputy fired shots.

Officials say Loftis died at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The bureau, which is investigating the shooting, does not release names of deputies involved in shootings and did not release Loftis' race.
