Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi Retires Amidst Claims He Created Hostile Work Environment

OAK RIDGE - Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi announced his retirement from the Oak Ridge Police Department August 17 in order to spend more time with family and friends.

On the same day, the ORPD announced its “Ask an Officer” event, which will take place Tuesday afternoon at the Oak Ridge Civic Center. The event, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Senior Center, is planned to provide information on how to increase safety and security in everyday life.

Akagi’s retirement announcement comes on the heels of reports he created a hostile work environment within the department.

His retirement comes after multiple accusations and investigations into Chief Akagi creating a hostile work environment.

The "Ask an Officer" event is now scheduled quarterly, and will focus on day-to-day household safety, not the department's affairs.

Although it was requested by senior citizens, people of all ages are welcome to attend. Police ask you call 425-3999 to reserve a spot.

The event starts at 1:00 Tuesday afternoon.
