Multi-Car Crash Closes Newfound Gap Road For Hours On Tuesday

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK (WVLT) -- A crash involving at least three cars closed Newfound Gap Road for several hours Tuesday.

Rangers with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park said they responded to the crash after 3 p.m., and other agencies assisted as well.

The crash happened near mile marker 22, shutting down Newfound Gap Road between the Sugarlands Visitor Center and the Smokemont Campground until just before 8 p.m.

The parks service says an RV hauling a car struck a GMC SUV. The car that you see badly damaged in the photos was the car being towed. Rangers say nobody was inside that vehicle during the crash.

A spokesperson with the parks service says two people were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and two people were taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville via ambulance. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
