Four Knox Suspects Arrested After Becoming Belligerent with Officers

What began as a disturbance outside Southbound in the Old City on Sunday morning ended in four arrests after one man shoved an officer in an attempt to free another being taken into custody.

An officer with the Knoxville Police Department said he was trying to arrest Ahmad Manning, 26, around 1:28 a.m. near 106 Central St. for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. While taking Manning into custody, KPD said another man — 24-year-old Shawntez Matthews — shoved the officer to allow Manning to run away.

Two officers took off after both, and Matthews allegedly refused orders to stop. Once he did, police said he turned to confront the officers and refused comply with their demands. As a result, KPD said the officers had to take action in order to arrest him.

Manning was caught as well and taken into custody. KPD said more charges may be pending against him.

Matthews, who KPD said shoved an officer, was arrested and charged with simple assault on an officer, disorderly conduct by fighting, resisting arrest and drunkenness.

KPD said two other suspects — Thomas Dixon, 24, and Jaeland Lawson, 25 — were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication as well. According to arrest records, they were kicked out of Southbound bar for causing a disturbance, but when staff tried to make them leave they "became belligerent."

All four were released from jail, but KPD said they took Matthews back into custody Monday afternoon because he was on probation for a previous conviction of sell and delivery of a controlled substance.

All four will be in court for their arraignment at 10 a.m. June 26.
