Knox Officer Injures Ankle While Chasing Suspect Monday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Knoxville Police Department officer fractured his ankle while chasing a suspect Monday night. Investigators said it started when officers stopped a red Kia Soul that was speeding and swerving on Virginia Avenue.

Once stopped, backseat passenger Delano Shorts was asked to step out of the car. Instead, police said he pushed through officers and ran towards Western Heights. While chasing Shorts down a steep embankment one of the officers severely fractured his ankle.

Other responding officers eventually arrested Shorts about 200 yards away from the initial traffic stop.

All three people inside the car were arrested. Nicole Iddins, the 18-year-old driver, is charged with reckless driving, open container, underage consumption and simple possession of marijuana.

Delano Shorts, 22 years-old, is charged with simple possession of cocaine and pills, evading arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, among others.

Dashawn Motley, 21-yeas-old, is charged with criminal impersonation, among others.

The injured officer will be out of work for an extended period of time for recovery.
