Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen's office
said a gang member has been convicted of robbing and shooting a man in
Lonsdale.
Joshua Hurt, 19, was convicted of especially aggravating robbery,
attempted voluntary manslaughter, and employing a firearm during the
commission of a dangerous felony. Officials classified Hurt as a member
of the Crips criminal street gang.
During a four-day trial, prosecutors told the jury that on May 8, 2016,
Hurt shot one of his friends five times to steal $500 cash. The victim
said they thought Hurt was joking when he initially demanded the money,
but then tried to run away from the scene on Burnside Street when it
became clear Hurt was serious.
“This conviction could not have been possible without the cooperation of
the community who came forward to help put this violent offender behind
bars,” said DA Charme Allen.
The case has been set for sentencing on May 31, where Hurt faces a
minimum of fifteen years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Especially aggravated robbery is a Class A felony that carries a
punishment between 15 and 25 years without the possibility of parole.
Prosecutors said they plan to seek an enhanced sentence due to Hurt's
alleged gang affiliation. |
