LEE COUNTY, Va. (WJHL/AP) -- A family dog
mauled a baby girl only eight days old at her home Wednesday, the Lee
County Sheriff's Office told WJHL.
Sheriff Parsons said the baby girl passed away at UT Medical Center from
her injuries.
Officers were called to the scene at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday on reports
that a family pet had attacked a child. The Associated Press reports
that deputies were told a "large shepherd-type" attacked and mauled the
girl while she lay in a bassinet.
WJHL reports that the child was transported to Lonesome Pine Hospital,
then Holston Valley Medical Center and then to UT Medical Center in
Knoxville.
Parsons said the child had extensive injuries to the upper part of her
body.
The family's dog is in the custody of Lee County Animal Control.
"More than likely the animal will be destroyed at some point, but right
now the animal is just in custody," Parsons told WJHL.
Parsons said the investigation is continuing with the Lee County
Department of Social Services. |
