Newport Police Say Couple Arrested After Taking Police On Chase Through Local Golf Course

NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Newport Police Department arrested a man and woman after they fled an attempted traffic stop by police.

Devon Bailey, 24, and Kimberly Stickland, 27, were arrested on Feb. 25 following a chase through a local golf course.

According to the police report, an officer with Newport police attempted to pull a driver and passenger of a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado over after he observed the vehicle traveling 42 mph in a 30 mph zone on E. Hwy 25-70. When the officer attempted to pull the driver and passenger over, the driver, later identified as Bailey, sped up.

The officer pursued the vehicle on Highway 70 as the vehicle turned onto O'Neil Road and continued to chase the suspects as they made their way to Golf Course Road. At this point, the driver of the Chevrolet slowed to a stop.

The officer opened the door of the patrol car and began to give the suspects verbal commands. At that time, the driver of the Chevrolet sped off and drove onto Golf Course Road.

In the report, the officer indicated that he continued to pursue the suspects to a wooded area near the Smoky Mountain Country Club golf course. The driver of the truck went onto the fairway and caused damage to the landscape.

The suspects drove further and stopped at another wooded area. According to police, Bailey and Strickland exited the truck and ran. The officer pursued the two on foot and captured Strickland and placed her under arrest.

The officers gave a description of Bailey to dispatch and were soon notified that a man matching that description was seen at a residence on Golf Course Road. The Cocke County Sheriff's Office responded to the residence and took Bailey into custody.

According to the report, damages to the golf course were estimated at $1,000.

Bailey was charged with destruction/damage/vandalism of property, speeding, reckless driving, failure to exercise due care, improper lane change, vandalism, failure to comply, fleeing police and evading police.

Strickland was charged with evading arrest. Both are being held in Cocke County Jail.
