A 15-year-old freshman student at
Claiborne High School was taken into custody after the Claiborne County
Sheriff's Office said he delivered a threatening hand-written note to
his school around noon on Thursday.
According to CCSO, the school resource officer obtained the note and saw
that it made threats to kill students and teachers beginning Friday
morning.
After a thorough investigation by CCSO and the New Tazewell Police
Department, the juvenile was taken into custody after he admitted to
writing the note. He said the note was a prank, and that he did not mean
to hurt anyone. According to the sheriff's office, he said the note was
his way to get out of school.
CCSO said the student was charged with making a false report and
disrupting a meeting. A juvenile judge ordered that the student be
placed into custody and held at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention
Center in Knoxville.
The sheriff's office said the child would be transferred back to
Claiborne County next Monday for a detention hearing.
"Because of the world we live in today, threats such as these are taken
very seriously," Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray said. "Protecting
the children of Claiborne County and the teachers who teach them is my
top priority. People who choose to threaten others by whatever means,
will be thoroughly investigated, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law." |
