Sen. Ted Cruz expressed his stiff
opposition to a White House proposal to grant a path to citizenship to
1.8 million so-called Dreamers.
The framework for an immigration bill also calls for $25 billion in
funds for a border wall and would end programs like chain migration and
the visa lottery.
The Senate began Thursday debating some of the immigration proposals,
but Cruz said he will not support a path to citizenship for DACA
recipients.
"That is dramatically to the left of where Barack Obama was," he noted
on "Fox & Friends," adding that the original executive order was
"illegal and unconstitutional" in the first place.
He said Republicans promised the Amer
American people they would not support
"amnesty."
"DACA under Obama did not provide
citizenship, it was just a work permit. Why would Republicans be
galloping to the left of Barack Obama?" he asked.
Brian Kilmeade said the White House and many Republicans want border
security and must give up something in a negotiation, since the Senate
only has 51 Republican votes.
"Mark my words. If Republican majorities in Congress pass citizenship
for millions of people and amnesty, I think it’s quite likely we will
lose both houses of Congress and Speaker Nancy Pelosi will impeach
President Trump," he warned.
He dismissed the accuracy of polls showing 70 percent support a path to
citizenship for Dreamers, calling for Congress to instead focus on
Kate's Law. |
