State Bill Would Ban Tanning Bed Use For Kids Under 18
Do you think teenagers should be able to
use tanning beds? Some of Tennessee's lawmakers don't think so.
A bill introduced in the Tennessee Legislature aims to ban people under
the age of 18 from using tanning beds.
Tennessee's current law states that anyone under the age of 14 must be
accompanied by a parent or legal guardian that signs a warnings
statement and statement of relationship to the child prior to tanning.
Violators of the current law could face fines up to $500 and a Class B
misdemeanor
Under House Bill 1489, "tanning devices in tanning facilities" will be
prohibited for anyone younger than 18. The bill was crafted by State
Senator Haile and State Representative Hazlewood.
In the bill's estimated fiscal impact note, lawmakers said the bill's
passage would be insignificant to state and local tax revenue because
teenagers will shift their spending to tanning bed alternatives.
