Lawsuit Filed Against Maury County School Board And Former Teacher Tad
Cummins In Alleged Kidnapping, Assault Of 15-Year Old
A lawsuit was filed against the Maury
County School Board and former teacher Tad Cummins in the alleged
kidnapping and assault of one of his students, a 15-year-old girl.
Police said Cummins preyed on the teen while she was in school. His
teaching license was revoked in July.
The lawsuit claims that the "public school failed its obligation to
protect students from a predator. A public school allowed conditions to
exist which enabled a teacher to develop a controlling, manipulative
relationship with a vulnerable and impressionable fifteen-year old
student."
The suit accused the school of failing to follow Title IX, a federal
mandate requiring K-12 public schools to protect students from sexual
harassment and promptly respond when allegations emerge.
WTVF contacted Maury County School officials who were unaware of the
lawsuit.
Cummins and the teen were found in a small cabin in a remote location in
northern California in April 2017.
Cummins pleaded not guilty to charges of transporting a minor across
state lines for the purpose of engaging in criminal sexual conduct and
obstruction of justice.
