Heritage High School On Lockdown Early Monday After 17-Year Old
Threatens On Social Media To Bring Gun To School
Heritage High School and Heritage Middle
School were placed on a soft lockdown Monday morning after authorities
say a 17-year-old high school student threatened on social media to
bring a gun to school.
The Blount County Sheriff's Office says two girls reported the threat to
the school resource officer at Heritage High School on Monday morning
after seeing the post on Snapchat.
School resource officers from other schools were called to stand at the
gates of the school to search for the boy, who is in 11th grade.
The sheriff's office says the boy showed up with his mother shortly
after school started and was arrested and taken to the juvenile
detention center. He is charged with being a delinquent by false report.
The lockdown was lifted after about an hour and 10 minutes.
"This is a perfect example of our students 'seeing something and saying
something.' By notifying a building administrator, leaders were able to
swiftly address the situation," said a Heritage High School
administrator.
Sheriff's officials say the gun in the social media post turned out to
be a BB gun. The boy is being held at the Blount County juvenile
detention center pending a release hearing Tuesday.
The middle school was placed on soft lockdown due to its proximity to
the high school.
