SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT UNTIL 4PM EST
SUN ...ARCTIC COLD WILL IMPACT SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, EAST TENNESSEE AND
SOUTHWEST NORTH CAROLINA INTO THE NEW YEAR... AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL
MOVE ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AND SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS TONIGHT
USHERING IN MUCH COLDER AIR INTO THE REGION FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE.
UNSEASONABLY COLD ARCTIC AIR WILL REMAIN ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH MOST OF
THE WEEK. HIGHS IN THE LOWER 20S TO LOWER 30S WILL BE COMMON FOR SUNDAY
THROUGH THE ENTIRE WEEK, WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND
TEENS OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. LOWS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS
CAN BE EXPECTED THROUGH THE WEEK, WITH TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 0 TO 10
DEGREES BELOW ZERO ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN. BRISK NORTHERLY WINDS
BETWEEN 5 AND 15 MPH WILL COMBINE WITH THE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES TO
PRODUCE DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS THROUGH THE WEEK, ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE
HIGHER ELEVATIONS. WIND CHILLS WILL DROP TO 5 TO 15 DEGREES BELOW ZERO
ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS, 5 DEGREES ABOVE ZERO TO 10 DEGREES BELOW
ZERO ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA AND PLATEAU COUNTIES, AND NEAR
ZERO TO 10 ABOVE ZERO ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AND SOUTHWEST NORTH
CAROLINA. WHEN VENTURING OUTSIDE, REMEMBER TO WEAR LAYERS OF
LOOSE-FITTING, LIGHTWEIGHT, WARM CLOTHING. WEAR A HAT BECAUSE MUCH OF
YOUR BODY HEAT CAN BE LOST FROM YOUR HEAD. MITTENS OR GLOVES, SNUG AT
THE WRIST, WILL KEEP HANDS AND FINGERS WARM. LASTLY, STAY DRY AND OUT OF
THE WIND IF POSSIBLE. CONSIDER BRINGING PETS INDOORS AND ENSURE
LIVESTOCK HAVE ADEQUATE SHELTER. CHECK ON NEIGHBORS, ELDERLY, AND
HOMELESS. TAKE THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT WATER PIPES FROM THE
EXTREME COLD. IF USING A SPACE HEATER, REMEMBER TO KEEP IT AT LEAST
THREE FEET AWAY FROM FLAMMABLE MATERIAL. USE GENERATORS OUTSIDE IN A
WELL VENTILATED AREA. NEVER RUN A GENERATOR INDOORS BECAUSE OF TOXIC
FUMES. STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND OTHER LOCAL MEDIA FOR
FURTHER DETAILS OR UPDATES. |
