The City of Knoxville and the Knoxville
Police Department feel their plan to protect the public during a planned
white supremacist rally in Downtown Knoxville Saturday worked.
Residents affected by the street closures
were permitted to leave their homes and apartments as needed.
Designated areas for protesters and counter-protesters were established,
and metal detector wands were used at the entrances of those areas.
"Our goal is public safety, and that made more difficult because of the
location where people were gathering," said a local Law Enforcement
agency spokesman. "It's much more difficult than public safety around
public buildings
The protest area took place near the Ronald McDonald house in Knoxville.
