Two People Arrested In Clinton Highway Shootings Over Weekend

Two people were shot and injured at a residence on Clinton Highway Saturday, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Department.

Chief Deputy Mark Lucas say both victims had apparently suffered not life-threatening wounds.

According to Lucas, deputies responded to a report of a person shot at the Bread Box Market on Edgemoor Road in Claxton at about 5:24 p.m. Saturday. When deputies arrived, they found the victim, Nathan Lynn Phillips, 36, of Clinton, with gunshot wounds.

Another person was taking Phillips to the hospital but pulled over at the Bread Box Market to call for an ambulance. Phillips was taken to UT Medical Center. Police describe his wounds as more serious than originally thought. Phillips remains in the hospital.

When deputies arrived at the actual location of the shooting on Clinton Highway, they found that William Ernest Foster, 34, had been shot. Foster was taken to UT Medical Center by EMS where he was treated and released.

Deputies located suspects Jacob Lynn Rutherford, 23, of Oak Ridge, and Maggie Taylor Atteberry, 24, of Clinton, who were believed to be involved in the shooting. The suspect and his girlfriend were taken into custody without incident at a relative's home.

Rutherford was charged with three counts of attempted murder, once for the attempted murder of Phillips and once for the attempted murder of Foster. Investigators said Rutherford attempted to shoot a third person but missed. Rutherford faces additional charges, according to deputies.

Atteberry was charged with accessory after the fact and was released on bond.
